The largest U.S. for-hire trucking and freight companies by revenue are UPS, FedEx and J.B. Hunt Transport Services, according to the 2026 Transport Topics Top 100 For-Hire Carriers list, which ranks companies by 2025 revenue. Among the top 15, Knight-Swift runs the most tractors, 26,187, counting company, lease-purchase and owner-operator units.

Transport Topics, a trade publication, compiles the list from company reports and its own estimates. The figures below are from the 2026 edition as published in November 2026. Revenue for parcel and logistics giants includes far more than trucking, so the ranking measures company size, not truck count.

Who are the largest for-hire carriers by revenue?

Rank Company 2025 revenue Tractors Main business
1 UPS Inc. $88.7 billion Not reported Parcel and freight
2 FedEx Corp. $79.7 billion 22,978 Parcel and express

4 FedEx Freight $8.7 billion 16,709 LTL
5 XPO $8.2 billion 9,700 LTL

14 ArcBest $4.0 billion 4,229 LTL and logistics
15 Hub Group $3.9 billion (estimated by Transport Topics) 2,421 Intermodal and logistics

FedEx Freight appears separately from FedEx Corp. after its spinoff. Tractor counts include company-operated, lease-to-own and owner-operator tractors, as reported to Transport Topics.

Which trucking company has the most trucks?

Within the top 15 by revenue, Knight-Swift reports the most tractors, followed by FedEx with 22,978 and J.B. Hunt with 21,448. TFI International, with 19,121, and FedEx Freight, with 16,709, round out the five biggest fleets on that list.

Revenue and fleet size tell different stories. Landstar earns $4.7 billion with 8,514 tractors because most of its capacity comes from leased owner-operators, while Hub Group reports 2,421 tractors because much of its freight moves on rail with trucks only on the ends. Our explainer on LTL vs truckload shows why LTL carriers dominate the upper half of the list.

What does each type of carrier haul?

  • Parcel: UPS and FedEx move packages through hub networks, with tractor-trailers on linehaul between hubs.
  • Less-than-truckload (LTL): FedEx Freight, XPO, Estes, Old Dominion and ArcBest consolidate shipments from many customers through terminals.
  • Truckload: Knight-Swift, Schneider and Landstar haul full trailers for one shipper, often over the road.
  • Dedicated: J.B. Hunt, Ryder and Penske Logistics assign drivers and trucks to one customer’s freight under contract.
  • Intermodal: J.B. Hunt, Schneider and Hub Group move containers by rail with drayage at each end.

How do private fleets like Walmart and PepsiCo compare?

Private fleets haul a company’s own goods and do not sell trucking to others, so they are ranked separately. Transport Topics’ 2026 Top 100 Private Carriers list ranks them by highway tractors:

Rank Company Tractors Trailers
1 Walmart Inc. 13,589 92,839
2 PepsiCo Inc. 11,486 29,351
3 Sysco Corp. 9,000 (estimated) 11,000 (estimated)
4 Performance Food Group 8,787 11,452
5 US Foods 5,699 6,903

Walmart’s 13,589 tractors would rank just behind Schneider’s 14,300 among the for-hire top 15. PepsiCo also reports 19,019 straight trucks, which reflects route delivery to stores. Food distributors fill the next places because they deliver to restaurants and grocers on regular routes.

How can you check a carrier’s fleet size yourself?

Every interstate carrier reports its power units and drivers to FMCSA on Form MCS-150, and the numbers appear on the company snapshot in FMCSA’s SAFER system. Those counts are self-reported, are updated at least every two years and are listed by USDOT number, so a company with several subsidiaries shows up under several numbers. The snapshot also shows inspections, crashes and the safety rating; our guide to checking a trucking company’s safety record walks through it.

Bottom line

For drivers, the list says more about the kind of job than about pay: about half of the top 15 are mainly LTL or parcel networks built around terminals, while the truckload and dedicated names run the long-haul and customer-assigned work. For owner-operators, Landstar’s position shows that a company can rank near the top with leased trucks rather than its own.
